The Recreation Ground
As you step out from the Swan’s Nest turn left and remember to chant ‘location, location, location’ and by that time you’ll practically be in the Recreation Ground, or the “Rec” as the locals call it. This extensive park area sits across the river from the RSC and is a regular venue for food fairs and events, and perfect for admiring the Swans.
There is a paddling pool, mini golf course, a toddlers play area including a zip wire, bandstand and even tennis courts. The views of the River Avon, the town and the Swan Theatre are superb, but for an even better view you can even try the Stratford Big Wheel which operates during the summer.
Why not create some treasured memories at Charlecote Park. Enjoy being outdoors with your family or friends and explore the extensive parkland. This is a National Trust property and as well as the House there are terrific walks and a designated dog walking route to enjoy. It’s the perfect place to enjoy nature and look for fallow deer. Or why not bring a picnic, or better still a kite!
The Bancroft Gardens are located on the River Avon adjacent to the Royal Shakespeare Theatre, just a short stroll from the hotel. Enjoy sunny days in the wide grass lawns and gardens with the backdrop of the river. Features include a human sundial, a performance area and two fully accessible bridges over the canal basin and the lock. There is also the magnificent swan fountain, Gower memorial (featuring Shakespeare and 4 characters from his plays) and an array of statues, flowers and seating areas.
Avon Bank Gardens
Avon Bank gardens contain features of 18th century origin (notably the Grade II Listed orangery), but principally consist of the remains of mid 19th century villa gardens associated with a house rebuilt in 1866. Features include terraces, walks, mixed planting; and an impressive American oak tree. Now a public park that you can reach by walking over the footbridge past the RSC, or trying the Chain Ferry over from the Recreation Ground.
Stratford Canal Walk
Just across the River Avon from the hotel is the Bancroft Canal Basin, which is on the Stratford-upon-Avon Canal. Surrounded by beautiful gardens, you won’t want to miss this, just walk over the tramway footbridge from the hotel and you are there!
You can continue your walk up the canal which takes you all the way through Stratford and then out into the surrounding countryside to Wilmcote Locks. Keep going and you’ll end up meeting the Grand Union Canal at Kingswood, just south of Solihull about 14 miles later.
Upper Quinton Circular Walk
Upper Quinton Circular Walk is a 19.5 kilometre loop trail located near the hotel. It starts in Upper Quinton which is just 6 miles South from the hotel and takes in Ilmington, Ebrington, Hidcote, Mickleton and then back to Upper Quinton. Be warned, it contains quite an incline to negotiate along the way, but that’s part of the challenge isn’t it?
The Bell and Two Churches
The Bell and Two Churches is a 5.1 kilometre loop walk with some traffic sections. It starts (and maybe ends too) at the Bell pub in Alderminster. It crosses the River Stour, continues along well marked paths even crossing some livestock fields plus – spoiler alert – takes in two delightful Churches on the route. Alderminster is just 4.5 Miles from the hotel.
Welcombe Park Circuit
Welcombe Park Circuit takes you around the Welcombe Hills Country Park in a 3.9 kilometre loop trail. It features some superb countryside and beautiful wild flowers. The start of the walk is a pleasant 40 minute / 2 mile walk from the hotel.
Stratford Riverside Walk is a 2.4 kilometre out and back trail that starts just over Clopton Bridge from the hotel at the Marina. It goes along the banks of the River Avon and is good for all skill levels. The trail is primarily used for hiking, walking, nature trips, and bird watching.
